• Australian Legal Resources International (ALRI) is implementing an AusAID funded anti-corruption awareness project in East Timor. The project involves an initial workshop in Dili form 6-10 August, where approximately 20 East Timorese non-government organisations (NGO's) will participate in a "train the trainers" workshop. Topics covered at the workshop will include:
• Understanding effects of corruption on the community, the public sector,
• the private sector, the international donor community and business and investment.
• Assessment of accountability and transparency of the public sector in particular.
• The role of the community in relation to corruption.
• Means of enhancing accountability and transparency that have been applied in other countries and the strengths and weaknesses of those means as encountered elsewhere.
• Means of combating corruption.
• "Watch-dog" institutions and how they operate.
• Comparative analysis with experience within the region.
